Today’s post gives you a glimpse of how I created an art journal page for Valentine’s Day last month.
1. I start with a page of stream of consciousness writing
2. I paint random colors and shapes.
3. On top of the words and colors, I add collage pictures.
4. When I added the photo, I noticed her hands pointed to the word “grow”, from there I chose to use a stencil and finish the page with the leaves.
Sometimes (as in this case), a word from my writing helps me to design the page. Or it can be just a shape or the collaged picture itself. Lately, I’ve been cutting and pasting my own drawings instead of magazine pictures because I don’t want to infringe upon copyright restrictions.
I get asked a lot about my art journal pages and that’s why I published Reflection and Sparks. You can order the e-digest (print or digital) and I include a more detailed tutorial about this process and more art pages. Here's the link.
I am almost finished with next Reflection and Sparks vol. 2. Along with more art, it will include poems and essays. I put out a “call for submissions” on social media and connected with writers.
I am so excited about this collaboration!
More about that in my next post. Stay tuned.

Love the simple inspiration here. This makes art journaling so approachable! Thanks for taking the time to outline your process.
Hi Kathleen,
Glad this helped you. The whole idea about art journaling is to make it non-intimidating! Play!
