Niagara - Frederick Church, originally uploaded by e14studio.

Another class field trip, this time across the street from the sculpture garden we visited the Museum of Fine Arts. Works from the Corcoran Gallery were on view. The exhibit was titled Encouraging American Genius.

To those of you reading my blog who don't know this, I was born and raised in Niagara Falls and my family still lives there. Approximately 2 miles from this wonderous waterfall is my family home. (Despite all the beauty that surrounds this landscape, the city itself is economically depressed; but that's another story in and of itself...)

Anyway, there I was in my adopted home of Houston, Texas standing in front of this amazing work of art (by Frederick Church) contemplating the beauty of the magestic waterfall which inspires me deeply. I must have stood in front of this painting for a half an hour!

Whenever I visit family, I go to the falls and gather my muses. So for today, my muses came to me through this work of art. The description read, "this is Niagara with the roar left out." (the sound of the water going over the brink is thunderous.)

One last thing to tell you - this painting had its debut in 1857, was the solo piece in a ticketed exhibit and there were over 100,000 visitors!

My mom was born and raised in Rochester, NY and as children we returned there and frequently visited the falls. I swear I can HEAR them just by looking at this photo. What a blessing that you can go there and find your muse!
