When we visited the Academy to see the "real" David, I was totally taken back by the statue. I saw it so many times in art history books that I thought I knew what to expect. But seeing it in person was one of the highlights of my trip. To think that Michelangeo was only 26 when he sculpted it (and it took him 4 years) It was 1501-1504.
There were about 20 students in the gallery drawing in their sketchbooks. I wished so badly that I had my sketchbook with me and had the time to sit and draw. So later when we had some time, I drew outside from the "fake" David. It was cold and I only had time to draw the hand.
